Art, Punk and Feminist Public Space and Time – Sara Raza


Aikaterini Gegisian and Sara Raza in conversation with Katy Deepwell

Subversive artistic methodologies that explore the artist’s hand as an important tool in the remapping, reordering and reimagining of feminist public space and time is the subject of a conversation with artist Aikaterini Gegisian and curator and writer Sara Raza, moderated by feminist art critic and academic Katy Deepwell. Gegisian is a featured artist in Raza’s recently published book ‘Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion.’

Following the discussion a book signing with Sara Raza will follow. The book will be sold for a special price of £19.95 (RRP £24.95) throughout the evening.

Sara Raza is an award-winning curator and writer and is the author of ‘Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion’ (Black Dog Press, London 2022). Raza has curated exhibitions and projects for international museums, biennials, and festivals including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Milan), Rubin Museum of Art (New York), Mathaf: Modern Arab Art Museum (Doha, Qatar), the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Saskatchewan, Canada), Maraya Art Center, (Sharjah), the Tashkent Biennale (Uzbekistan), the 55th Venice Biennale among others. Formerly, she was the Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator for the Middle East and North Africa at the Guggenheim Museum, New York and Curator of Public Programs at Tate Modern, London. She is the recipient of the 11th ArtTable New Leadership Award for Women in the Arts. Sara holds a BA (hons) in English Literature and History of Art and an MA in 20th-Century Art History and Theory, both from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and pursued studies towards her PhD at the Royal College of Art, London. She lives and works in New York City, where she is a Red Burns Fellow at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program and teaches on the Progam’s Masters’ course.

Aikaterini Gegisian is a visual artist and academic of Greek-Armenian heritage living and working between the UK and Greece. Her work has been shown in museums, galleries and in festivals including recently the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern, Valencia (2020); National Arts Museum of China, Beijing (2018); MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, Canada (2018);The Jewish Museum, Moscow (2018); Kunsthalle Osnabruck, Germany (2017); the Armenian Pavilion, 56th Venice Biennale, (Golden Lion recipient), 8th Brighton Photo Biennale (2018); 6th Moscow Biennale, Russia (2015) and 3rd Mardin Biennal, Turkey (2015). Gegisian received a BA (Hons) in Critical Fine Art Practice by the University of Brighton (2001), an MA in Fine Art by Chelsea College of Art and Design (2005) and a PhD by Practice by the University of Westminster (2014). In 2020 MACK published her collage photobook Handbook of the Spontaneous Other.

Katy Deepwell is Professor of Contemporary Art, Theory and Criticism at Middlesex University. She is an art critic and writes art history and art criticism about 20th and 21st century art with a specialism in feminist art criticism and theory.In 2021, she received a Distinguished Feminist Scholar Award from College Art Association, USA. She is the founder of KT press and editor of n.paradoxa: international feminist art journal (KT press, 1998-2017). She is the author of numerous books and her recent publication is the edited anthology: Fifty Feminist Art Manifestos (KT press, 2022). She has a PhD in Art History from Birkbeck College, University of London, MA Social History of Art, University of Leeds, BA (Hons) Fine Art (Painting) St Martins School of Art.
