Lecture date: 1997-10-20
Taking as its starting point the opposition between Melies and Lumiere (representing the magic and realist traditions of cinema respectively), Laura Mulvey considers a number of propositions regarding temporality and the photographic image that are familiar – particularly from the work of Barthes and Bazin – in relation to the still photograph and moving image. Although the lecture focuses on the past of still and moving images, it takes the present moment of changing technologies as its context.
Writer and film-maker Laura Mulvey is Professor of Film and Media Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London and Director of the AHRB Centre for British Film and Television Studies.
