AZUMI, Shin and Tomoko
Simplicity and Surprise
Public

Shin and Tomoko Azumi present a selection of their designs. The London-based company Azumi was founded in 1995 by Shin and Tomoko Azumi to explore new forms of furniture and ‘interior accessories’. The company’s designs are functional and clean, yet provocative, and draw on the different backgrounds of the founders. Shin studied industrial design, while Tomoko studied architecture. Together they also worked as director and art director for a dance group, Vital Theatre, at the Edinburgh Festival in 1993, from which the company gained a sense of playfulness and the theatrical. Azumi has worked on projects of many different scales for well-known furniture retailers including Habitat (for whom they designed a typically expressive and unconventional hat stand) and Purves & Purves. They have also worked on a range of small objects including lighting, tableware, and clocks. The work of Azumi is represented in the collections of the V&A, the Crafts Council Museum, and the Geffrye Museum.
