Day 78 of the 100 Day Studio: Alessandro Columbano, Mike Dring and Gareth Proskourine-Barnett present research and creative outputs from work by the Co\aborative Lab:oratory – an interdisciplinary design & research initiative at the Birmingham School of Architecture and Design. Collaborative Conc(re)te.RIP is an ongoing exploration on dematerialised artefacts of Birmingham’s built heritage using digital and open source tools to capture layers in the city’s history. Physical elements of the structures are captured and combined with fragments of archival footage to present them back with contemporary readings and new narratives for the city’s history to continue capturing the imagination of the public long after they have been demolished. This talk highlights John Madin’s Birmingham Central Library, an iconic brutalist landmark from the post-war period and the late William Mitchell’s relief sculpture at Hockley Flyover.
