Master planning isn’t always the top-down imposition of a grand scheme. Once connected to the river Thames and to acres of marshland the East London village of Rainham has been cut off by a series of clumsy infrastructure projects. But over the last decade a mix of architects and urban designers have been trying to reconnect Rainham to the river through a series of small, sensitive projects that might help to redefine master planning.
