The Social Life of a Mid-Size European City: Lara Schrijver and guests

Antwerp has a rich history, as one of the wealthiest and progressive cities of the 16th century; that developed into a competitive 19th-century industrial harbour city, through today, with a wealth of contemporary architecture and an urban structure and strategic plan that combines the values of the historical and the contemporary city.

Today’s panel is based on the historical and contemporary qualities of Antwerp as well as the challenges it faces as a European mid-size city for the 21st century.

In a conversation chaired by Lara Schrijver, Professor in Architecture at the University of Antwerp, three speakers each take a different perspective on these conditions and processes of the city:

Anne Malliet / Office of the Flemish Government Architect discusses alternatives to the current urban housing developments in Antwerp.

Saar Meganck / founding partner, Dhooge & Meganck architects discusses co-housing from the architect’s perspective, in terms of design and collaborations, between architects, cities, developers and (future) inhabitants

Sara Elloukmani / PhD candidate in sociology, University of Antwerp discusses various ways in bringing the unheard voices of the city into institutional processes and structures, helping to include the many individuals and communities that otherwise might go unseen.

ABOUT THE SERIES
In the first of a series of online seasons addressing the development of particular cities, the Architecture Foundation and Brickworks Vande Moortel present a series of films focussed on the Belgian city of Antwerp. The season, which has been developed with support from the Flemish Architecture Institute and Flanders House, will comprise films about recent buildings in Antwerp as well as issues of city-wide concern.

ABOUT VANDE MOORTEL
Brickworks Vande Moortel was established in 1864 in the Scheldt Valley in Oudenaarde. Today it is more active than ever at the same location. Guided by the Vande Moortel family, the company has grown to become an important manufacturer at the top line of facing bricks and is the Belgian market leader in clay pavers. Throughout its long history, Brickworks Vande Moortel has always integrated the latest technologies. It was one of the first manufacturers to launch ecological formats at 7 cm on a large scale, and was the first European manufacturer to produce Class A and A+ clay pavers.
