AA Diploma Honours 2022

AA Diploma Honours is the highest award you can achieve upon completion of the 5 year programme. Up to one 5th year student per diploma unit is nominated to present for honours at the end of each academic year – a ten minute presentation that needs to convince the Diploma tutors of the value, relevance and premise of their project.

Six projects were awarded Diploma with Honours in 2021–22, manifesting the breadth of interests contained within the school; Sinan reinserts the patio into the Katchi Abadi or squatter settlements of Karachi, Pakistan; while Ylam proposes a new agricultural framework of temporary ownership, interdependent strips of land, and retrofitted users in Brittany, France; and James sets in motion a practice positioning the architect as a mediator between human and non-human worlds, which he tests within brownfield sites over 200 years across London. Thomas looked to transform the architecture of the house from a complicit weapon and place of violence into a safe space as a home of refuge for survivors of domestic abuse; while Amaya becomes a material broker, connecting a material reseller with a demolition contractor to ensure the reclamation of the york stone paving from a demolition on Fleet Street in London; and Tetsuya introduces a new horticultural community in a former coalfield in response to the Levelling Up white paper issued by the UK government in 2022 as an alternative architectural approach for collective living in rural conditions.

The six recipients of the AA Diploma with Honours 2022 will present their final projects and discuss the process of how they each developed their projects, their choice of subject matter, site, media, position and audience, as well as what receiving honours means to them.
