Aguahoja I by Mediated Matter Group | Dezeen Awards

Aguahoja I by Mediated Matter Group, which was named design project of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, could be used in architecture says judge Nelly Ben Hayoun in this movie produced by Dezeen.

The research group, which is headed by Neri Oxman, digitally designed and robotically fabricated the structure using pectin, cellulose and chitosan.

According to the studio, these molecular components, which are found in tree branches, insect exoskeletons and human bones, are the planet’s most abundant materials.

It was the way that the design behaves like a living thing that interested the judges.

“The material itself is of course a living material – it sweats, it grows, it expands, it smells – so it’s coming with all of these new attributes that you would not find in a piece of design that would usually be glossy or shiny,” said Ben Hayoun.
