Ralph Erskine – Architects on Architecture

Lecture date: 1976-02-12

‘It’s a matter of some concern that the architecture that seems to interest us a good deal doesn’t seem to me to be involved in people’. Ralph Erskine discusses his recent work, including the redevelopment of the Byker area of Newcastle. For most of his career Erskine was based in Sweden where he designed numerous office buildings and housing developments. Concerned that the expression of buildings should engage the general public interest, generate a sense of ownership, and appeal to genuine participation, Erskine’s philosophy of work accommodates the climate and the context together with the social and humanistic needs of people.
