Filmmakers Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoine (Koolhaas Houselife, Barbicania) discuss their latest film, ‘Tokyo Ride’, following its screening on 22 September 2021 as part of the Barbican Centre and Architecture Foundation’s Architecture on Stage programme. The Q&A is led by Nishizawa’s long-standing collaborator, the architect Lucy Styles.
TOKYO RIDE
An urban road movie, extensive interview and diary of a day, ‘Tokyo Ride’ offers a portrait of both Japan’s capital and one of its most celebrated architects, Ryue Nishizawa. Ten years in the waiting, ‘Tokyo Ride’ records a date between Bêka & Lemoine and Nishizawa, resulting in an improvised collaboration between the filmmakers, their protagonist, the city, the weather and a car. Lifelong Tokyo resident and Pritzker Architecture Prize-winner Nishizawa leads a tour through the ever-changing city – including tea at the house he designed for his SANAA partner, Kazuyo Sejima – during an April day of showers, driving and conversation.
