Malevich and the Abstracting Line – the fifth in an eight-part lecture series which investigates how the line is understood in order to rethink its history. One of the central questions that arises from the context of Walter Benjamins work and one that will come to play an increasingly more central role is abstraction.
Andrew Benjamin looks at the relationship between abstraction and the drawing of lines in Malevichs work. This will necessitate a reconceptualization of Suprematism in terms of the relationship between potentiality and the material line. Benjamin is currently Professor of Critical Theory in Design and Architecture at the University of Sydney.
