Half-Architecture / Jo Nagasaka

Jo Nagasaka believes that architecture should not be considered an autonomous entity but rather be composed in a “heteronomous” way, adapting to its environment and activities. This approach is not about adding more to what already exists, instead it seeks to draw out the latent potential of the environment and generate new value. He refers to this approach as “Half-Architecture.”

Of course, the goal is to create beautiful spaces, but not spaces that isolate themselves from their surroundings. Rather, we should explore the possibilities of architecture to support the activities and flow of time in a place, fostering new communities through its presence.

JO NAGASAKA established Schemata Architects after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1998. He founded the shared creative office “HAPPA” in 2007. Currently he has an office in Kitasando, Tokyo. Jo works extensively in Japan and around the world. Most recently, he collaborated with thatch craftsman Ikuya Sagara on the installation ‘Yatai 2: Kaya’ as part of the Distillation of Architecture: 家具 exhibition at the AA, on show in the Front Members’ Room until 7 March 2025.
