100 Day Studio: Philip Boyle – ‘Save our Schools’

Day 51 of the 100 Day Studio: The LCC and GLC were through the ILEA responsible for Education and were innovative and ambitious in providing London with Schools and Colleges of Further Education designed by architects working inside Local Authorities until 1986. Since then this architecture has been subject to changes in policy, neglect, misunderstanding and in some cases demolition. However some work because of inherent flexibility and good design and in particular these two were important master works and offer great potential for contribution to future education. This talk by Philip Boyle of docomomo.uk draws attention to the qualities and significance of West London and Hammersmith College which is under threat of demolition, and Bromley Hall special school which although listed is also vulnerable. Both were designed by Bob Giles who discusses their design, following Philip’s talk.
