Day 96 of the 100 Day Studio: Shahed Saleem presents two of the UK’s most significant mosques, Frederick Gibberd’s 1977 building at Regent’s Park in London and Marks Barfield’s recently completed Cambridge Central Mosque. The pair span Britain’s post-war Muslim history. Through this period the politics of race, identity and belonging have been under constant negotiation and contestation. This talk attempts to reinterpret these buildings with reference to the writings of Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy and Abdul Hakim Murad, and asks if they can be said to represent a shift from a politics to a ‘theology of belonging’.
