Alumni Advice: Aelene Thorne & Patrick Usborne

In this series of lunchtime talks, hear from some of our most inspiring Alumni from the 2008 to 2010 class as they discuss how they steered their career to success through the challenges and difficulties of the last recession. Using examples from their own careers, invited Alumni will discuss the opportunities that emerge in times of adversity and how to build a resilient practice to ensure longevity and sustainability. Each session is followed by a Q&A chaired by a recent graduate or student.

Patrick and Aelene met in the corridors of the Architectural Association while queuing for Diploma interviews. Their 12-year discussion about setting up practice started there and continued throughout their time with FCBS and Mae (Aelene), and Serie Architects (Patrick). It was their time at dRMM Architects, particularly experimenting on engineered timber projects, that solidified their passion for great quality, socially useful, and sustainable design. Perpendicular emerged from discussions about how to pair genuine environmental and social responsibility with innovation in offsite construction for healthier and happier living. Perpendicular was founded in 2019.
