After receiving the AA Diploma in 1987, Ben van Berkel established Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau with Caroline Bos in Amsterdam, and became an influential force in Dutch architecture through projects such as REMU Electricity Station and the Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam. In 1998 they established a new firm, UN Studio – a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure – to organize strategic forms of collaboration with other architects, graphic designers, photographers, stylists and new media designers.
Van Berkel has lectured and taught at many architectural schools around the world. Between 1996 and 1999 he led AA Diploma Unit 4, The Urban Studio. In this lecture he concentrates on recent work by UN Studio, including the Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen, a bridge in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, and a town hall/theatre for Ijsselstein in the Netherlands.
