Rachel Armstrong is a ZAP Professor of Design-Driven Construction for Regenerative Architecture at KU Leuven, Belgium. She is an EIC Ambassador and former Vice Chair of the Supervisory Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, Culture and Creativity Knowledge and Innovation Community (EIT C&C). A Senior TED Fellow, Rachel is a pioneer in regenerative architecture, a field that integrates biological and origin of life principles into material practices to create sustainable interventions. Her projects include the Living Architecture project (2016–19), the Active Living Infrastructure: Controlled Environment (ALICE) (2019–21), and the ongoing EIC Pathfinder Challenges project Microbial Hydroponics (Mi-Hy) (2023–27), which explores carbon and nitrogen metabolism in advanced hydroponic systems.
