Emtech Master Class
Emtech master classes provide design inspiration and knowledge of implemented fabrication and struction engineering techniques in a professional field. They deliver an extended presentation about the speaker’s work.
Time-based Spatial Formations through Material Intelligence
At HYBRIDa and at the Bio Design laboratory we are fascinated by how biological organisms achieve complex emerging structures from simple components.
This new approach to the design through knowledge of material, its “intelligent” behaviour and the processes of morphogenesis in nature, complemented by the use of parametric software and advanced modelling, will enable us to produce designs that are not only totally innovative in material, form and behaviour, but also able to adapt to their environment.
In short, we will learn that the limit between natural and artificial (or man-made) has been reconsidered from the perspective of biomimetic engineering.
Sylvia Felipe and Jordi Truco received their graduation at 2000 from Escola Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona, ETSAB. During their stage in London they coursed the Emergent Technologies and Design Masters at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, obtaining several awards.
Once back in Barcelona they founded HYBRIDa, Where they realized that one of the most important lines of work at the office is research, innovation and development focusing in one particular idea in architecture: Should a building be a static, rigid and weatherproof object with several gadgets controlling light, sound and temperature? Or should it be an articulated system, capable of interacting, which continuously relates to its environment, and somehow receives information and reprocesses it to respond to this stimulus by self-regulating? An open, dynamic “live” system?
With the topic of responsive and intelligent architecture, Sylvia and Jordi are directing and coordinating two seventh European Research program FP7. HYPERMEMBRANE Capacityes for SME’s, and the HYPERMEMBRANE DEMOPROJECT under a budget of 2.2 milion Euro.
