In this lecture, Filip Dujardin will give an overview of his activities in the field of architectural photography, visual arts and large scale 3d installations. The resulting body of work is an evolution of capturing, deconstructing and reconstructing fragments of architecture and landscape into new ‘impossible realities’. Dujardin will explain how his digital photomontages of imaginary architectures were derived from architectural photography and how he translated this into 3d architectural installations. It is a process of how reality becomes fiction only to subsequently become reality once again. The work also questions the status of architecture and its representation in society.
Born in Ghent, Belgium in 1971, Filip Dujardin studied History of Art at the University of Ghent, and specialised in architecture. He went on to study photography at the Royal Academy of Ghent. He worked with photographers Carl De Keyzer and Frederik Vercruysse before working as an independent photographer for private and public clients, in the field of architecture, interior and design. His work has been published in national and international books and magazine, and has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the world including the MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Most recently, he was part of the ‘Bravoure’ team that curated the Belgian Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale. Filip Dujardin currently lives and works in Ghent, Belgium and is represented by Van der Mieden Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium.
