Filmmaker Sally Potter’s Advice to the Young | Louisiana Channel


“You have to find your own value system. And fight for it!”

Meet world-famous British filmmaker Sally Potter who here shares her advice to young people.

“We live in times of great discouragement. So you have to give yourself your own encouragement. And know that what you are attempting to do is difficult but worthwhile.”

“Listen to that inner voice that says I really, really want to do this, but I don’t know how, and I am scared, but I will do it anyway.”

Sally Potter (b. 1949) is an English film director and screenwriter. Her films have won over forty international awards and received BAFTA and Academy Award nominations. Her 1992 breakthrough ORLANDO (1992), an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s classic novel starring Tilda Swinton, was followed by THE TANGO LESSON (1996), THE MAN WHO CRIED (2000), YES (2004), RAGE (2009), GINGER & ROSA (2012), THE PARTY (2017). and THE ROADS NOT TAKEN (2020). In September 2022, her short film LOOK AT ME, starring Chris Rock and Javier Bardem, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

Potter was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2012, and her book “Naked Cinema – Working with Actors” was published by Faber & Faber. She composes music for her films, and her soundtrack albums have been released by major labels, including Sony Classical and Deutsche Grammophon. PINK BIKINI, her first record as a singer-songwriter, was released in May 2023.
