The leaders of the Kharkiv School of Architecture are joined by representatives from Beirut, Belfast and Sarajevo to discuss the challenge of Ukrainian reconstruction.
The Kharkiv School of Architecture has relocated to Lviv and is leading the debate about how Ukraine can reconstruct its cities in a way that respects Ukrainian culture and resists what they describe as “colonization through reconstruction”. This event presents a series of presentations, discussions, and debates as it draws upon the experiences of Beirut, Belfast and Sarajevo to support Kharkiv as they work to find pathways through and beyond the war.
Speakers:
Iryna Matsevo and Daria Ozhyhanova. Are part of the Kharkiv School of Architecture leadership. Iryna is Deputy Vice Chancellor and Daria is Architecture Programme Director. Iryna is a historian and researcher and Daria is an architect and co-founder of NOEMA studio
Hiba Bou Akar is Assistant Professor in the Urban Planning Programme at Columbia GSAPP where she leads the Post Conflict Cities Lab. Hiba co-edited “Narrating Beirut from its Borderlands” and is author of “For the War Yet to Come :Planning Beirut’s Frontiers”.
Vernes Čaušević and Lucy Dinnen are architects living and working in Sarajevo where they run their studio Projekt V Arhitektura. They are the architects of the international prizewinning Most Mira Peace Centre. They teach in Bosnia and at University of Sheffield and the Global Free
Mark Hackett is an architect in practice working on the urban issues of Belfast. He was a founder of Forum for Alternative Belfast and a founding partner in 2003 of Hackett Hall McKnight which has completed a number of award-winning buildings including the MAC arts centre in Belfast.
Robert Bevan is an award winning Journalist, Author and heritage consultant and architectural critic for the Evening Standard. Robert is author of the “Destruction of Memory” and his latest book Monumental Lies: Culture Wars and the Truth about the Past is launched in October 2022.

Robert Mull is Professor of Architecture and Design at the University of Brighton, visiting Professor at Umeå University, Sweden, a director at Publica and founder of the Global Free Unit which works in areas of displacement and political change worldwide.
