Kathryn Gustafson – Sculpting The Land

Lecture date: 2001-11-28

Kathryn Gustafson presents an overview of her landscape projects. Renowned for her designs using huge quantities of displaced earth, Gustafson has sculpted sensuous landscapes throughout America and Europe – the latter with Neil Porter as Gustafson Porter. Her designs evolve from intuitions relating to each site. For the work to have greatest effect, she argues, it must respond to concepts and feelings. Regardless of scale, her projects are instilled with dynamic shifts in form and plane, and her signature use of earth, water, stone, steel, and vegetation. Completed projects encompass a variety of landscape types including large public parks and plazas. Among the former are a new cultural park for the city of Amsterdam, the Terrason park in the Perigor region of France, the interior of the Great Glass House for the National Botanic Garden of Wales, and the regeneration of Crystal Palace Park in South London. Plaza projects include the Ross Terrace for the American Museum of Natural History, New York, the Human Rights Square for Evry in France, and the South Coast Plaza in Los Angeles. Other projects include the landscaping of the Parisian HQs of Shell and Esso, and the competition-winning Garden of Forgiveness in Beirut.
