The recent period in the life of the Atlanta-based practice Mack Scogin Merrill Elam has been very different to any other. While before it had built prolifically, for the past three years it has instead worked on a small number of major commissions and participated in several competitions. Merrill Elam discusses how the frustrations that accompany such a situation are more than compensated for by the way that the practice has been allowed to speculate on places and projects far from its usual territory while also being forced to account for its views on achitecture in response to the numerous questions from prospective clients.
Merrill Elam and Mack Scogin have worked in architecture together for over thirty years, founding their current award-winning practice in 1984. They specialize in public sector buildings, particularly libraries and campuses – for example, the Hargrove Music Library, or Wellesley Campus Centre – but have also worked on smaller scale, innovative private projects such as the much-publicized Nomentana Residence. Merrill Elam teaches and lectures regularly and has served as visiting critic at the GSD, Harvard, and has held a number of Professorships.
