Evening Lecture
Roger Zogolovitch, Meredith Bowles, Amandine Kastler and Jack Self, chaired by Paul Crosby
This event brings together a panel of distinguished AA alumni to discuss how their studies and professional experiences have enabled them to develop unique pathways to practice, contributing to the built environment sector in unique and complementary ways, exploring facets of architecture outside of the parameters of conventional practice whether that be property development, executive architecture, writing, editing and curation and teaching.
Meredith Bowles is an architect and director of Mole Architects. As part of his path to running a successful practice, Meredith has practised as an artist, a theatre designer, an interior designer, a developer and a builder. He has taught architecture at the universities of Sheffield and Cambridge, and has also run studios at the successful practical annual building workshop ‘Studio in the Woods’.
Roger Zogolovitch is a developer and the creative director of Solidspace, building new housing and mixed-use projects. All these respond to design and innovation challenges to make excellent buildings on small urban gap sites using the adaption of Solidspace volume DNA. Each project is a genuine collaboration with an architect with the aim of making ‘development as art’. The latest of these projects is The Houseboat on Poole Harbour, Dorset, which won the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2017. He is the author of Shouldn’t we all be developers? and was appointed Honorary Surveyor by the Royal Academy in 2015.
Amandine Kastler is an architect based between London and Oslo who established her own studio in 2015. She worked at OMA/AMO Rotterdam on the Hermitage Masterplan before joining David Chipperfield Architects in 2010. She teaches at the AA and the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, along with tutoring at several institutions. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally, and she has been awarded several international prizes including the RIBA Bronze Medal.
Jack Self is an architect based in London. He is director of the REAL foundation and editor-in-chief of the Real Review. His architecture practice focuses on alternative models of ownership, contemporary forms of labour and the formation of socio-economic power relationships in space. His work has been shown worldwide, including at the Maxxi in Rome and the Tate Britain in London. In 2016, he curated the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. He is the author of Real Estates: Life Without Debt (2014), a contributing editor to the Architectural Review and editor-at-large for 032c.
Paul Crosby is the Head of the AA Part 3 Professional Practice programme. He studied at the Polytechnic of Central London (University of Westminster). He has extensive, international experience having set up an office in Germany, and has held senior positions in the offices of Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield and Martha Schwartz. He consults small upcoming design studios on practice-related matters and has a particular research interest in the nature of future practice.
