Santiago Calatrava – Architecture, Space and Movement

Award-winning architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava discusses aspects of movability and foldability in his structures and the forms that have developed in recent bridges, sculptures and buildings, which include Alcoy Community Hall, Roosevelt Island Project in New York, the Alameda Bridge and Metro Station in Valencia, and a number of new tension sculptures. Calatrava established a practice in 1981 in Zurich, later adding offices in Valencia and Paris. His Trinity Bridge, Salford was completed in 1995, and among his latest projects are the new Science museum in Valencia, the extension to Saarinen’s Milwaukee Art Museum, Sondica Airport in Bilbao, and a new concert hall in Tenerife.
