“You won’t make it, and the money is bad, and you’ll be divorced, and you’ll lose your teeth. But don’t ever stop.” Norwegian writer Tomas Espedal gives his advice to a younger generation of writers.

As a writer, you work alone: “Of course, you should,” Tomas Espedal exclaims: “And then you have to sell your soul to the devil.” To Espedal being a writer is an opportunity like no other: “To be a writer is to choose a certain kind of life. And you only get that one opportunity. If your choice is wrong, you’ll end up in an office.”

Tomas Espedal (b. 1961) has written numerous novels, most recently “Loves” 2018. His works explore the relationship between the novel and other genres such as essays, letters, diaries, autobiographies, and travelogues. His work has been nominated for the Nordic Council Prize, Scandinavia’s most prominent literature prize.

Tomas Espedal was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg in connection with the 2019 Louisiana Literature Festival at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.
