Artist Taryn Simon on Abortion: “A woman’s fundamental right is taken away.” | Louisiana Channel

“You just start to wonder if every woman in the United States stopped working today and refused to participate in any form of production, the place would crack. That could actually change everything.”

American artist Taryn Simon is in chock about living in a time and country where “a woman’s fundamental right is taken away”, the Supreme Court, after 50 years, abolishes the constitutional right to abortion.

“The woman is the center. Everybody came out of a vagina. So, of course, the warrior nature of that space is going to be forever at the center of disagreement”, Simon says.

Taryn Simon (b. 1975) is an American artist who has worked in photography, text, sculpture, video, and performance. Simon’s works have been exhibited internationally at the 56th Venice Biennale, Italy, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA, Tate Modern, London, UK, Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark.
