Critical issues of race, environment, and globalisation are not yet recognised by the built-environment industry, which forms the largest employer of designers and engineers. Our industry doesn’t yet reflect the contribution nor the suppressed potential of many demographics, having instead sought to insulate design from the human experience and social circumstance. The architectural and engineering fraternity must thus focus on knowledge and research to resolve these critical issues.
Albert Williamson-Taylor leads AKT II’s design and engineering practice-wide, and has led the engineering tutoring for the AA DRL architectural master’s course since 2011. Having received his BEng and MSc in structural engineering from the University of Bradford in the early 1980s, he has been a member of London’s Newham and Southwark design review panels for many years, gaining Fellowship with the Institution of Structural Engineers, and Honorary Fellowship with the Royal Institute of British Architects. He regularly lectures and appears as a panellist or juror for many academic and public institutions.
