Domestic City: Ugo La Pietra

Researcher in the visual arts Ugo La Pietra has been exploring for over half a century the relationship between domestic and public space, developing radical ideas of dwelling. Together with his friends and fellow Italian Radical architects he participated, with his “Telematic House”, to the MoMa exhibition “Italy: the New Domestic Landscape” (1972) and the collective Global Tools.

Ugo La Pietra is an architect, artist, educator, editor but also a prolific author. However, very few of his texts have been translated into English. “Domestic City / Città Domestica” obviates this lack, as it is his first publication in English that condenses decades of reflections on inhabitation practices and dwelling just as the author intended it in 1968, when he posted it in the streets of Giulianova the famous banner that read “inhabiting means being at home everywhere”.

In this first volume of the bilingual architectural book series “Stanze” (Plectica Editrice), the author directly addresses the theme of the room, overcoming spatial and disciplinary boundaries in line with the spirit of the editorial project. Three former AA students and members of Stanze’s editorial team will be presenting the book series, the author and the publication. They are, respectively, the director of Stanze Francesca Romana Forlini, editors Stefan C. Popa (AA PhD) and Jacopo A. Colarossi (AA Dip). The launch will be followed by responses from AA professor Marina Lathouri and Q&As from the audience.”
