Power FORMAT 3

FORMAT Issue 7, organised and hosted by Shumon Basar
Wednesday 12 July 2017

FORMAT is the AA’s Summer ‘live magazine’ that looks at the shapes that knowledge takes. The seventh issue will focus on ‘Power Format.’ From culture’s obsession with rankings and power couples, to media’s throttle on politics, and the architect’s craving for omnipotence (when in fact, the opposite is often what ensues), power persists in recognisable and radically new patterns. Invited guests share their Power Formats from the worlds of art, architecture, theory, media and more.

In the age of ubiquitous digital coverage and endless alternative news sources, Turi Munthe presents the profound shifts occurring in the power ⎯ and powerlessness ⎯ of journalism. The films of Yuri Pattison visualise the hidden infrastructure of communication technology, from Google’s server farms to the Hong Kong hotel room that whistle-blower Edward Snowden took sanctuary in after leaving the United States.”

Turi Munthe is a partner at North Base Media, an investment firm focused on journalistic enterprise and digital-driven opportunities in emerging markets. Before that he founded Demotix, which became the worlds largest network of photojournalists.

Yuri Pattison is an artist who lives and works in London. His artistic world has included routers, humidifiers, surveillance cameras, office plants and cheap replicas of design classics, moving between the sculptural and digital. Solo exhibitions have taken place at: Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, St Gallen; Kevin Space, Vienna; mother’s tankstation limited, Dublin; Chisenhale Gallery, London; Helga Maria Klosterfelde Edition, Berlin. Pattison was the recent recipient of the Frieze Artist Award 2016.
