Over the past 9 years Assemble has developed a form of practice that has balanced the conflicting pressures of financial sustainability and collectivity. They have been lauded as a radical form of practice; non-hierarchical, socially oriented – heralding a new era of architectural work following the financial crash in 2008. This lecture reflects on how mythology becomes structural tokenism through a detailed look at the iterative internal structures of Assemble’s working practice and the subsequent forms of architecture it has produced.
Fran Edgerley is a founding partner of Assemble. Her work is focused on the possibilities in collective relations created by different social and environmental structures. She has lectured at institutions across the world including MOMA NYC, British School at Rome, and the Biennial Arquitectura De Quito. This year she will be working as a tutor on the AA Foundation course.
