Plan the Planet – Can we control the Planet?

The expansion of the reach of mankind on the planet is driven by complex calculations and abstractions combined with technologies to sense the complex working of the Earth System. Models, predictions, time series, simulations, analytical calculus are what link climate change sciences, Earth-System analysis and contemporary econometric practices. Following the investigation on the procedures to transform the planet into an object of international planning, we explore how the abstraction of model-making and the vast machine of remote-sensing technologies is shaping the decision-making practices and the many polities that characterise the contemporary epoch.

John Palmesino and Ann-Sofi Rönnskog are architects and urbanists. They established Territorial Agency, an independent organisation that combines architecture, analysis, advocacy and action for integrated spatial transformation of contemporary territories. Recent projects include Oceans in transformation, Museum of Oil, Anthropocene Observatory and North. They are Diploma 4 Unit Masters at the AA. www.territorialagency.com
